MTX

The Mr. T Experience are BACK, announce three tour dates

Okay, before you get too overly excited, the title is a bit misleading. For one, Mr. T Experience never really called it quits officially. Also, they’ve announced a few shows in California and there might, or might not be more. I suppose I got a bit ahead of myself and the title was just my first reaction as a fan. For those who just want the real details, you should probably just skip the next paragraph (or two) because they will be written from a fan perspective and not actual information that we’d love all of you to share.

For those of you who might have missed the height of MTX, they were one of the first Gilman Street / Lookout Records! bands to really inspire and embody the East Bay sound to my ears. I’ll never forget seeing them back in the early days with the original lineup where the term “Songs About Girls” was really coined. I’ll also never forget thinking they were “my band” and telling everyone as I was listening to early MTX, “This Is Punk!,” proclaiming it in such a way as to contest whether what other people were listening to was punk. I was a dork,  I loved the sound, I love the intelligent lyrics with some of the best word play I’d heard and the shows were always the most fun I’d ever had. Still to this day I look back fondly at those discovery days and MTX is the standout band to me. They were the band that got me into Lookout Records! and paved the road for so many other great bands.

Flash forward through many tours and albums later from MTX, singer / songwriter Dr. Frank (Frank Portman) had more writing to do, just not always in the musical form. He’s also written several books and the latest being King Dork Approximately, a follow up to the original King Dork. You can check out and buy those here. I sat around reading these books and listening to their songs hoping to just see them again. This is now looking like a reality, so thank you for listening to my excitement because to be honest, I could go on for days about MTX. They are still “my band.”

THIS IS THE ACTUAL NEWS: So here’s the real deal. Mr. T Experience and The Queers will be playing shows with The Bombpops and The Piniellas in California from March 27 – 29 (full details below). There is a possibility of more shows…but that’s all I’m going to say as of now. Get your tickets, book those flights (if you’re at a distance like me) and go see some great bands perform together!
