Odd Robot A Late Night Panic
As I sit here listening to Odd Robot‘s ‘A late Night Panic‘, I’m overcome with a sense of soothing familiarity. I sit back in my seat and just relax. At first I can’t put my finger on why I feel so instantly comfortable and connected to this album, and then it dawns on me, this album is a combination of 3 of my favorite bands! Death on Wednesday, The Smoking Popes and Alkaline Trio. Yes you read that correctly. I can hear their influences all over this album and I gotta tell you it’s awesome!
This is an album that you don’t want to skip a single song on. From the sense of irony built on serious lyrics mixed with poppy music, to the guitar tone, everything is perfect. The leads and solos are so good, and there are plenty of hooks as well to keep you on your toes. This is pop punk at it’s finest, but never too poppy.
My favorite track on the album is Vonnegut. “ Cause I wake up the morning after, head pounding and sucking ego, shaky hands and palpitations, fucking up my motivation.” The chorus is a chant along with the perfect combination of words “But I’ll just settle for a drink.”
It’s funny, I was doing some research on this band and I found out that some of the members used to be in Longfellow. Longfellow played in my basement in Reno NV in about 1998. The show was amazing and we let them crash for the night. The next morning we were all going to the warped tour in Lake Tahoe and I had to come up with some fast cash so I found some cd’s to sell at Recycled Records down the road. As I was leaving one of the guys in Longfellow asked what all I was selling. I showed him the Operation Ivy tribute album called Take Warning and said, “You ever hear this album? It sucks.” Longfellow dude: “Oh we are actually on this comp.” It was a foot in mouth moment, but then again maybe that’s a part of the connection I feel to this Odd Robot album.
Go pick up a copy of A Late Night Panic on Wiretap Records and show some support for this great band so we all can keep getting this joyous noise from them. The album artwork alone is worth the purchase and was done by Tim Cochran. The links below will help you do just that!
Thanks for reading.
