This “job” is pretty great. I get to listen to new music and then tell people about it. Sometimes, what I get to listen to isn’t my thing (it happens) but sometimes I get to hear things like these 3 tracks from Lightweight.
Called simply “Lightweight” these are the very first songs written by this new band and they are definitely something to be excited about. Started by 4 friends, who “After being in insignificant bands of various punk sub-genres for the last 10 years on and off together, we decided to finally try to get our shit together and do something fun and worth our time,” Give this a listen and I think you’ll agree that they did exactly that.
Space Cadet starts what’s likely to be a stuck on repeat listen to this demo/ep. “you and I were cut from different cloth, but boy did we make a pattern that kept us warm”. The shared whiskey soaked vocals highlight these excellently crafted songs. Lyrical gems jump at you from every track “when I’m around you, I don’t feel black or blue, I need to know just how, you keep me grounded” .
The music is definitely up to snuff as well. Just the right amount of grit and flash to highlight the lyrics but never overpowering them. A somewhat minimalist approach and indie feel really show off the fact that these guys know exactly what they are doing. Everything is in perfect balance leaving you with the impression that you are seeing something very special evolving right before your eyes, or in this case your ears.
I’ll confess that when I got to the third, and final track Round Trip I was transfixed and unable to take it off of repeat. The words, the music, all dredged up memories of attempts at long distance relations that just somehow never stayed the same and left me feeling lost inside. “when I get back, will it be weird, will it fall apart, just like it always does” .
Dramatic and dynamic, the sound that these four are creating is something you will find yourself wanting more of and listening to again and again.
Lightweight is releasing a special cassette only edition of these three tracks (only 100 will ever be made for you collector types) shipping out around May 10th, 2017. For those of us not into retro technology it’s available right now on digital format also at the link below. Get on board now kids, this is a band to keep your eye on.
