Review: Strike Twelve – ‘Down With The Ship’

Strike Twelve –  Down With The Ship

Last year the guys in Strike Twelve got together with their friends in Margate and released a spectacularly fun EP called Do Each Other.  If you aren’t familiar with this band already, that will be your next stop as you work your way back into their catalog because you my friend are about to become a fan.

Down With The Ship is the latest from the Temecula fun in the sun band.  The expectations were pretty high going into this one for me.  I’ve loved these guys since I first heard them, and everything they do seems to get better. Which is tough because they started off pretty rad. True to their pattern, DWTS is the best so far.  The bright sound and upbeat tempo serving as counter points to some of the more serious topics in songs like The End is Near, and the title track.     Their brand of  fast tight skate punk also highlights the often hilarious lyrics in tracks like the Vandals-esque Midwest Town and Strike Twelve’s Excellent Adventure.   These guys even take on the 80s classic Major Tom, bending it to their will, making it sound fresh and new again.

This album is going to be hard to put away. Every time I’ve listened I’ve found something new I dig about it. Sometimes I’m into the exceptional guitar work. Sometimes it’s the frenetic drumming. Other times it’s the smart (and smart ass) lyrics. And if you’re into the whole “audio production” engineery tech head thing, it’s here for you as well because it sounds fantastic.  Something for everyone!

Down With The Ship is available for pre-order right meow! Release is February 24th on the rad SoCal album slingers Felony Records. With release shows this weekend to celebrate! If you dig doing cool stuff, pick it up from the guys in person at a show and score a sweet shark tee while you’re there.  If you hate cool stuff, you’re into the wrong band and should re-evaluate your life choices.
