I’ve been absolutely in love with The Smith Street Band for the last 6 years, and have seen them play countless times across at least 4 different states. When I heard that they were releasing a new album this year, I immediately went to the Side One Dummy site and preordered it. It has been on a constant rotation for me since it arrived, with good reason – “More Scared of You than You are of Me,” the band’s 4th studio album, is just as fantastic as everything before it.
Will Wagner is easily one of my favorite song writers, with a style I find mostly lacking in the punk scene. Just like everything before it, “More Scared…” is full of a great mix between Wagner’s usual story-writing song style and songs with catchy hooks and choruses. Once again, Wagner wrote an album worth of lyrics that are heart-felt, relatable, and force the listener to reflect.
One of the things I love so much about this band is that there is always, without a doubt, one song on their albums that makes me cry. In the case of this new release, it has to be “Birthdays,” although this is definitely one of the most emotional albums the band has put out so far. Perhaps it’s a good idea to have a box of tissues handy if you’re feeling a little vulnerable the first time you give this album a listen.
The Smith Street Band are a group of incredible musicians that are incredibly hard working. It seems like they’re always on tour, and always traveling all over the world. Though currently touring their home country of Australia, they’ll be hitting the road (sky?) and touring Europe this summer before heading to Chicago to play Riot Fest 2017.
More Scared of You than You are of Me in limited editions of colored vinyl for its first pressing was released April 7, 2017 on Side One Dummy Records.
