Dead Frets – True South
Dead Frets is not as well known as it should be. The solo side project of Sic Waiting‘s Jared Stinson is well deserving of your time and attention. Already known for an emotive writing style with his regular full band line up, his solo project adds an entirely different aspect to the experience. Without a wall of sound to hide behind, Stinson’s musicianship truly stands out.
A journey man of sorts, Stinson has toured extensively both as an artist and as a shepherd to bands out on the road. That experience and those miles are reflected in his point of view and in the songs throughout True South, Painting a rich picture in the muted tones of melancholy .”they speak in cliche, like they know better days are comin’, i know better” the lyrics of “Broke and Hearted” chime out from True South‘s opening track. A sense of sadness instills each of the eight tracks on this beautiful album.
Musically and lyrically accessible, these songs take you deep into the blue tinged heart of Stinson. “it’s lonely, in this head without you” he soulfully/sorrowfully sings in “Margins and Notes” the albums closing track. His writing speaks straight to your core, gently reminding you that behind every rainbow lurks a dark storm cloud. A necessary shadow to expose the beauty of this world. A world that, without it, is incomplete. So, grab some tissues and get ready to let an artist paint you a picture of sadness and loss, so that you may see just how great life really is.
