I always get really excited when bands from California come and play shows in Colorado – especially since a few of them make the trip out just to play in the Rocky Mountain Region. This was the case this weekend when my friends Gentlemen Prefer Blood came out to play a free show at Bowman’s Vinyl & Lounge, a new bar/record store/venue in Denver.
The night opened up with The Murder Skies, a three piece local act. They really got the crowd ready for the night, playing some catchy tunes it was impossible not to at least tap your foot and nod your head to. Add them to the list of Denver bands I have to watch out for, since I’d never had the chance to see the trio play.
Next was Jack’s Smirking Revenge, who were celebrating their singer, Alex’s birthday! JSR always puts on a great show, and if my memory serves me correctly, they played a new jam or two – which makes sense, because they just put out some songs!
Third were my friends, Gentlemen Prefer Blood, all the way from Los Angeles, California. There had to have been a bit of pressure for them, being the only non-local band, but they definitely lived up to expectations – although, I think the altitude might have lived up to its hype, too! They’re set to release a split with Black Dots, so they closed out their set with their version of a Black Dots song.
Finally, Black Dots! I’ve not been shy about my love for this band, which only grew when I hit the road with them and Western Settings back in January, but I feel like the times I get to see them spread out from time to time. It had definitely been a while, but it was great to hear these four play some of my favorite songs and get to sing and dance along. If you haven’t given them a listen yet, I can’t recommend them enough – they stole my heart the moment I got here!
Aside from the awesomeness of the show, I highly recommend checking out Bowman’s Vinyl and Lounge if you’re in Denver. The atmosphere is rad, they have records for sale, and there’s great drink specials!
